The Hole in the Sky
The night was endless; the sky was darker than anything you could ever imagine. The rain poured down all day, everyday much like that of water from a pitcher. Nothing in this city was ever dry, the walk ways, the stepping stones, and the outsides of the shacks in which the people lived. They are wet as the night is dark. The shacks or the huts in which the people lived consisted of a bed for everyone on the family, a closet and a kitchen. The shacks were twenty feet wide and the same length long, while having a ten foot high ceiling. This place was their only means of escape.
In this city of Ausenhooke, which wasn’t much of a city at all, consisted solely of walkways and a river that flowed around it and in it providing another means of transportation. The city resembled a much modern day Italy, aside from the humongous dam that surrounded its city which provided its only means of power, and also served as a wall to keep the people in. The dam was not controlled by people, but rather by the elite robots that controlled the city. The knick name for these robots was “Potters Elite”. And aside from that, the only job that that the people of this small city could obtain was that of one in a factory. Women worked in one factory, and men in another, separating sexes. But there was one thing about this city that made it different from any other was that above the city, beyond the clouds but still within seeing distance was a small hole. Some believed it was the answer to all their troubles, others believed it was where you went after you passed, however; no one is ever able to obtain entrance.
The city consists of many different families, but is not overpopulated. This is because when people thirty, they seem to disappear, whether they are kidnapped or dead no one knows for sure. One family is the Krause’s, which consists of Sophia who is 29, Jordan and Rodrik both of which are 25. Their parents disappeared right after their births, and no one could ever explain it.
“I don’t have much longer to live.” Announced Sophia, as she paced back and forth.
“None of us do Sophia, our lives are controlled by those menacing robots, and there is no way around them.” Said Rodrik.
“There is no way to escape this hell hole, the dam surrounds us and the sky’s the limit.” Said Sophia angrily.
“The sky is not the limit! Have you not seen the hole over our heads?” interrupted Jordan.
“The hole is a long shot Jordan, Sophia and I both know that. Besides that’s way too high for us to get to even if we do build something.” Announced Rodrik.
As the three of them pondered the thought of creating something high enough to escape, there is a knock at the door.
“Good morning neighbors, I have a package for you, it was dated for today and it’s from your parents!” Shouted Cal, as he entered the room.
“What is it Cal?”Said Sophia in curiosity. “
“It seems to be some kind of code Sophia, I Have no idea what it means. Maybe you’ll do better than I did. But it’s entitled Sophia 30th birthday.” Said Cal.
“Hey, it has been nice seeing you Cal but Jordan and I are about to go for a run!” Exclaimed Rodrik as they but took off running out of the room.
Cal waved goodbye, and Sophia blew a kiss they watched the two men leave. They then turned their attention to the code laid out before them. Their bewildered minds only looked in confusion as they realized the code was made of up letters from other languages. And as they looked towards the bottom of the code, they found out that they needed to check every building the city for a clue, and when they collect all the clues the message will be clear.
“This has to be some kind of prank cal!”
“I’m afraid not Sophia, this is the same letter that your parents got when they disappeared. We desperately need to figure this out, because both of us do not have much longer to live.”
As Cal left, and said her goodbyes, Sophia was left to decide her fate on whether she would crack the code or live the rest of her life in wonder.
When Sophia’s brothers got home from their run, she greeted them with dinner and they all spent the rest of the night talking about the code. Something that would bring amongst great argument, but ended in agreement. They needed to crack the code.
The next few months Sophia and her brothers spent searching every building in the city. Not many buildings allowed access, so they had to maneuver past Potters Elite to gather clues. And as they began to gather more clues, they began to be able to make out the code until finally it was complete. It read “SAY TO THE GARGOYLE BY THE CITY LIBRARY, THAT THE TIME HAS COME TO DRIFT AWAY”.
“We must do this at once!” Exclaimed Sophia, as she collapsed on the floor unconscious.
“You know Jordan, we can use the message to escape right now.”
“What about Sophia?” Questioned Jordan.
“What about her? We don’t need her! We have what we want, now let us leave this world!” Exclaimed Rodrik.
“Rodrik, we can’t do this! We can’t leave our sister!”
“Well then, I don’t need you!” Yelled Rodik as he pulled out a knife and stabbed his brother to death.
The body was dropped in the river surrounding the city, and a metal chair was attached to the body. Rodrik then grabbed the message and wandered on down to the library where he found the gargoyle. He then said the message to the gargoyle, and it told him to jump on. As Rodrik jumped on the gargoyle took off going upwards towards the hole, approaching it with every flap of its wings. Until, not only it and Rodrik were on the surface above. This world was full of everything that a person could ever wish for, everything that is except for his own flesh and blood.
As the hours passed, and Sophia arose from an almost endless slumber, she awoke an empty room with nothing in it except her.
“Hello?” Spoke Sophia in fear. As she gets up she realizes that the code was stolen, but that meant nothing to her for she had memorized the message. She then took off towards the library and found that there was no gargoyle to be seen. With fear in her eyes and tears strolling down her cheeks, she collapsed once more. She eventually regained the composure, and got back up. She completed the rest of her life in complete silence.
Sophia died 28 days later, it was her 30th birthday.
